Liam Henderson Discusses Serie A Experience & Empoli Objectives

Empoli midfielder Liam Henderson sat down with Serie A ahead of Matchday 14 to speak about his football experiences in Italy, Scottish footballers in the league, and the tough challenge of remaining in the Italian top flight.

Italian Football Experience

Liam Henderson is a true high-lander – no Scottish player has spent longer in Italian football than this midfielder. After spells at Bari, Verona and Lecce, he has become indispensable for Empoli: the 26-year-old has missed only one game since August 2021.

“I think my four, nearly five, years in Italy I have improved an extreme amount since I first arrived. I try to work hard every single day, keep myself fit, try to live good off the pitch, and yeah, give every time I come on the pitch 100%, and I think the coaches here appreciate that. I like everything about Italy. The people are very friendly, very kind. The food is really good, the weather is good. I drink more espresso coffee, I don’t drink cappuccino after lunch time, stuff like this. So, it’s good, it’s good, I take a little bit of the Italian life and put it into mine.”

Scottish Footballers in Serie A

Long gone are the eras of Tartan legends Joe Jordan at Milan and Graeme Souness at Sampdoria. Henderson is the eldest of a new generation of Scottish footballers plying their trade in Serie A. Alongside Empoli’s versatile number 8, you can count Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson and Verona’s left-back, Josh Doig.

When I came to Italy I thought it was important to give Scotland a good name, and I think I did that. It just shows that Italian clubs are looking at Scotland more and more, because they can get very good players for not too much money. So it’s been good. The boys who have came, Doig, Ferguson, have started very well for their clubs. Before they came I wrote them a little message asking if they needed anything, advice, anything like this, to just give me a call. But they seem to have settled in very well, which is good.”

Serie A Survival

After retaining their top-flight status relatively comfortably last season, Empoli are again facing the challenging waters of Serie A survival, this time under the guidance of coach Paolo Zanetti.

I think that’s always the goal at the beginning of the season, to stay in Serie A. If you look at clubs like Sassuolo who managed to stay in Serie A, and now they’ve been in Serie A for ten years, I think, that’s something we should strive to get. And yeah, it’s important. To survive in Serie A takes a lot of heart, a lot of good play, and a lot of dedication. So it’s something we are working on every single day.”

Teun Koopmeiners Discusses Atalanta Form & Gasperini

Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners sat down with Serie A ahead of Matchday 13 to speak about the club’s current form and goals, his transfer to La Dea, and Manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

Atalanta’s Form This Season

After finishing third for three successive seasons, Atalanta came eighth last term. That led some to believe the goddess had lost her powers – but this term, the team have lost just once in Serie A and Koopmeiners belives that all of the club’s targets are achievable.

“We wanna go back in Europe to play those matches here for the fans. If you see what kind of energy it gives them over the last couple of years when we played those matches, I think Atalanta as a club right now we belong there, and I think that’s the prime goal to end the season with.”

Koopmeiners Discusses Atalanta Transfer

Those are the words of one of la Dea’s key players at the moment, a Dutch box to box midfielder who looks like he was born to move to the Bergamo rhythm.

“I watched the playing style a lot, I watched some videos, some games before I came here. And the way they played, they always went forward, they created so many chances, scored a lot of goals, so it was attractive to me, so I was like “I really would like to play in that system” and I have really no regrets of coming here.”

Atalanta Manager Gian Piero Gasperini

No regrets now – but Atalanta and Koopmeiners took a while to get along. However, once the Dutchman did become a starter for Gian Piero Gasperini, he stayed there.

“In training I understood what he wanted but it is all about doing a lot of times, about doing it day in and day out to make it more automatically instead of thinking all the time “I need to be here, where do I need to be now?”. That was in the beginning because it’s so different. It takes a couple of games to get to know the system, and I think that after 5-10 games you can also put your own influence in the system because it’s not just only about playing the system but also to be of some value for the team. I have a really good relationship with the coach. I feel a lot of trust from him, I think you can see that by the minutes I play. I think if you’re in the trainings, you do some much tactics. You see how much think about the game. I think that separates him, from not all the coaches – because there are great coaches who all think a lot about the game – he is always trying to tell us what can happen in the game or what we should do in the game; and yeah, it’s also fun in the game when you play, you see things come up like what you discussed out during the week.”

Pedro Discusses Roma vs Lazio & Sarri

Lazio attacker Pedro sat down with Serie A ahead of Matchday 13 to speak about the Derby della Capitale between Lazio and Roma, what he offers, and Manager Maurizio Sarri.

The Derby della Capitale

To cross the river that separates Roma and Lazio is almost unthinkable in a city divided by such a fiery rivalry. Last season, Spanish winger Pedro not only jumped at the chance to switch sides but also became only the third player ever to score for both clubs in the fixture that matters the most to all Romans.

“We all know what the derby is likeand the passion it generates among all the fans, and to be able to score that goal was special and important for me and the best way to connect with the fans, the community and this huge club as a whole. I’m very happy to come here and help my teammates. I have been lucky enough to play with both teams, but this team fits my character and playing style better because of all the values it represents, and I think this has also been noticed when it comes to my performance in the team, and that has been important.”

Pedro: A Player of Quality & Experience

A fan favorite, the 35-year-old from Tenerife has put his class and experience at the service of the Biancocelesti, delivering 14 goals and 7 assists since joining Lazio.

“I think I can help the team both as a substitute and as a starter. I played very well in pre-season, but then I had the ankle injury, and I was a little bit… I missed games and training sessions, and it was hard to get back to fitness, but now I’m in good shape again. I’ve gained more consistency in recent games, and hopefully, I can continue to help the team like this, and we can keep fighting at the top to try to achieve our objective.”

Lazio Manager Maurizio Sarri

Pedro’s known Maurizio Sarri since their time together at Chelsea and explains that the coach has shaped the team to suit his system.

“We have adopted Sarri’s idea very well, which we worked very hard on last year, and I think that all the players, who have joined us this year, have adapted very well to both the manager’s idea and his system. We are showing it on the pitch. I think that we are a dangerous team when we play well, press high, have the ball and create a lot of chances. That has been evident throughout the season. (Sarri) He’s a motivational coach who encourages you in the games. He is charismatic which is important to mould the mentality which every player is demonstrating now, and I think Lazio deserves him.”

The last Serie A draw between Sampdoria and Fiorentina was back in January 2019 (3-3 at the Franchi) – since then there have been three wins apiece, the last one for Sampdoria last May.

Sampdoria could win against Fiorentina at home in three Serie A campaigns in a row for the first time since 1993 (run of four).

This is Sampdoria’s worst start in a Serie A campaign; they had always collected at least seven points after the first 12 games, with the lowest tally back in 1947-48 – furthermore, they have won only one of their first 12 matches of a Serie A season for the first time since 1974-75.

Match Insights: Fiorentina

Fiorentina have won their last Serie A away match against Spezia and they could win consecutive such games for the first time since September 2021 (run of three).

Fiorentina are one of the seven sides in the big five European Leagues to have more than 60% of possession this season (60.1%), along with Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Barcelona, Liverpool, PSG and Chelsea.

Sampdoria vs Fiorentina: Players to Watch

No Fiorentina player has scored more than two Serie A goals so far this season (2 goals for Jovic, Cabral, Ikoné and Kouamé) – the last time their top scorer in the league had less than three goals scored after their first 12 Serie A games was in 1991-92 (Batistuta, Orlando, Maiellaro and Faccenda all with two goals).

Francesco Caputo’s last Serie A home goal was April 16th against Salernitana, he has played eight home matches since then, his longest such run in the competition.

The last match between Bologna and Torino in Serie A ended in a goalless draw last March – the Rossoblù have not kept clean sheets in two consecutive top-flight games against the Granata since the 1980s.

After a 2-0 win against Lecce on MD 11, Bologna could win two consecutive Serie A home games for the first time since September 2021 and record two clean sheets in a row at Dall’Ara for the first time since April 2019.

Torino have lost just one of their last 10 Serie A matches against Bologna (W3 D6), with that defeat coming in March 2019 at the Olimpico Grande Torino (2-3).

Bologna and Torino have drawn each of their last five Serie A matches at Dall’Ara – the last away win for the Granata against the Rossoblù dates to April 2016, a 1-0 win with Andrea Belotti netting in the 93rd minute.

Torino have won each of their last two league games, the Granata have not had three wins in a row in the same Serie A season since March 2019 with Walter Mazzarri in charge (against Atalanta, Chievo and Frosinone).

Match Preview: Torino vs Milan

On 30 October 2022, catch the live broadcast of Torino vs Milan from the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on TLN TV at 3:30P!

Match Insights: Torino

Torino drew 0-0 in their last Serie A encounter with AC Milan, having lost their previous four against them in the competition (all without scoring).

Torino have failed to score a Serie A goal against AC Milan in their last 464 minutes (excl. injury time): they last scored against Milan in a 2-1 victory back in September 2019, thanks to a Belotti strike (in their last league victory against the Rossoneri).

Following their win against Udinese last time out, Torino could win two successive Serie A matches for the first time since last January (v Fiorentina and Sampdoria).

Match Insights: Milan

AC Milan have scored the most goals from open play in Serie A this season (21).

AC Milan are unbeaten in their last 17 Serie A away matches (W12 D5), the longest open run in the big-5 European leagues: they last had a longer such run between September 1991 and October 1993 (38 under Fabio Capello).

No side has attempted more shots from outside the box than AC Milan in Serie A this season (67), whilst Torino have had 48: however, the Granata are the only side yet to score a goal from outside the box so far.

Torino vs Milan: Players to Watch

No current Torino player has scored a Serie A goal against AC Milan; considering all competitions, their only player to have netted against them is Antonio Sanabria, for Real Betis in October 2018, in the UEFA Europa League.

Torino are Ante Rebic’s favourite opponent across the big-5 European leagues; he has scored five goals in five appearances against them (one for Fiorentina), including his only brace (on 12th May 2021, in a 7-0 win for AC Milan at the Olimpico Grande Torino).

Match Preview: Lazio vs Salernitana

On 30 October 2022, catch the live broadcast of Lazio vs Salernitana from the Stadio Olimpico on TLN TV at 12:55P!

Match Insights: Lazio

Lazio recorded their joint-second best start after 11 games in Serie A in the three points for a win era (also 24 points in 2002/03 and only fewer than the 28 collected in the first 11 games of 2017/18)

Lazio have conceded only five goals so far, the best return in the first 11 top-flight matches since 1973/74 (the season in which they won their first Scudetto).

Since May, only Napoli (zero) have lost fewer games than Lazio (their only defeat was against Napoli) in Serie A: the Biancocelesti have collected nine wins, five draws and one defeat in the last 15 league games played.

Match Insights: Salernitana

Only three of Salernitana’s 13 points this season have been picked up away from home – while they’ve lost their last two on the road without scoring. They last registered three defeats in a row without scoring away from home in the top-flight in November 1998 (four in that case).

Salernitana have conceded three goals from set pieces so far this season, while in the first 11 rounds of the last campaign the Campanians had conceded four goals from set pieces (of which, however, only one came from a penalty spot).

Spezia vs Fiorentina: Players to Watch

Among the players who have been directly involved in at least four goals in this league campaign, only Ante Rebic (278 minutes) has played fewer minutes than Pedro (two goals and two assists in 352 minutes): the Spanish player scored one goal in the last home match against Salernitana, but in 2022 he never scored in a Serie A match as a starter (four goals as a substitute).

Pasquale Mazzocchi – the defender with the joint-most dribbles completed (17 like Parisi) and the defender with the second most chances created from open play (15, fewer only than Di Lorenzo) – has already scored two goals in the current campaign and could become the first Salernitana defender to score at least three goals in the same Serie A season since Salvatore Fresi, who scored three goals in 1998/99.
